Job Title: Sam’s Village Manager: AVM is seeking a Manager for our vocational skills training centre, named ‘Sam’s Village’, to deliver and enhance our training programmes for vulnerable people in our community, manage all programme and operational functions within the training centre and promote the facility to other business markets; generating income to the facility. The position is based at Sam’s Village in rural North West Lilongwe district.

Primary objectives:

The Sam’s Village Manager has 3 main key strands to their role:

1. Operational Management

  • Day – to – day management of and capacity building of the team.
  • Active member of the AVM senior management team, contributing to moving the organisation forward in its key strategic goals.
  • Management of budgets and application of cost saving strategies.
  • Oversight of the day-to-day management of all facilities within the training centre.
  • Effective and efficient coordination of guest and visitor experience.
  • Adherence to and development of policies, standard operating procedures and processes that will ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery.
  • Advance vocational skills training opportunities and secure at least 1 training partnership per year.

2. Marketing / Business Development

  • Development of business models and marketing for the facility.
  • Identify and successfully secure new clients to utilise the facility.
  • Undertake all partnership liaison and business development.
  • Identify opportunities to promote and publicise the work and achievements of AVM to secure further support and funding.
  • Seek new links/partners with other NGOs and organisations in Malawi that can assist with capacity development of AVM.
  • Manage existing partnerships and explore opportunities for joint work.

3. Programmes

  • Oversee all programmes operating within the facility and support outreach programmes as needed.

Required qualification and experience:

  • An advanced Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and/or Administration, Marketing, Strategic Management with at least 4 years’ experience working in a leadership and management role.
  • Good understanding of the TEVET system in Malawi with emphasis on the informal/non-formal sector and an understanding of adult learning theories.
  • Experience of managing a learning institution.
  • Experience of identifying and successfully managing donor funded opportunities and projects.
  • Proven partner and stakeholder management experience.
  • A Master’s degree in a related field would be advantageous.

Required knowledge and skills:

  • Experience and knowledge of Training and Development, Technical Education or related field is advantageous.
  • Pro-active general management skills with a minimum of 3-4 years of staff and programme management experience.
  • Ability to both generate opportunities and to drive results.
  • Ability to work within donor funded budgets
  • Proven monitoring and evaluation skills
  • Successful proposal writing and funding generation
  • Marketing and business acumen
  • Excellent in written and spoken English and Chichewa languages with a full driving licence.

Desirable experience, qualification and/or ability:

  • Experience working in the Hospitality sector or service industry

Responsible to: The Chief Executive Officer.

Remuneration: The salary and allowances will be appropriate to your experience and within our funding levels. Please understand that we are a small charity and consequently cannot pay salaries in line large INGOs. You should not therefore apply if your salary expectations are in excess of K614,000 gross per month.

Accommodation: A 2-bedroom house within Sam’s Village is provided for the use of the Manager and his/her immediate family.

Contract: 6 months’ probation period followed by an indefinite period (subject to funding and AVM’s needs and priorities).
