Background Information
African Vision Malawi (“AVM”) is a small NGO based in Malawi and supported from the UK.
Job Title: Sam’s Village Manager
AVM is seeking a Manager for our training centre, named ‘Sam’s Village’, to enhance our vocational and life skills training for vulnerable and young people in our community. This will include overall management of the training centre which includes bringing in clientele and the rental of the facility. The position is based at Sam’s Village in rural North West Lilongwe district.
Primary objectives:
The Sam’s Village Manager has 4 key strands to their role:
Management
- Day to day management of the dedicated Village team (approximately 14 full time employees plus site workers and volunteers)
- Be a critical member of the AVM management team moving the organisation forward towards its key sustainable strategic goals one of which is making Sam’s Village a model of excellence
- Oversee outreach programmes in agriculture, health and education in conjunction with the appropriate project managers
Marketing / Business Development
Identifying and successfully securing new clients to utilise the Village facilities
Undertaking all partnership liaison and development
Managing budgets and identifying cost saving opportunities
Training
- Manage and coordinate all aspects of the vocational training programmes including trainee recruitment and induction, liaison with training providers and on-site trainers, and relevant staff
- Tracking progress and results, coordinating partners and stakeholders (where necessary)
- Reporting on necessary future training cycle development
Site Management
Overseeing the day-to-day management of all Village facilities including accommodation, reception, library, catering, vehicles and on-site and personal security
Ensuring all facilities are kept in excellent condition ensuring health and safety and fire prevention policies and procedures are implemented at all times
Required qualification and experience:
A relevant university degree with at least 3 - 4 years working experience in management
Good understanding of the TEVET system in Malawi with emphasis on the informal/non-formal sector
Experience of identifying and successfully managing donor funded opportunities and projects
Proven partner and stakeholder management experience
Required knowledge and skills:
Pro-active general management skills with a minimum of 3-4 years of staff and programme management experience
Ability to both generate opportunities and to drive results
Ability to work within donor funded budgets
Proven monitoring and evaluation skills
Successful proposal writing
Excellent in written and spoken English and Chichewa languages and full driving licence
Desirable experience:
Marketing or business management qualification
Experience working in the Hospitality sector
Responsible to: The Chief Executive Officer.
Remuneration: The salary and allowances will be appropriate to your experience and within our funding levels. Please understand that we are a small charity and consequently cannot pay salaries in line with large INGOs. You should not therefore apply if your salary expectations are in excess of K500,000 gross per month.
Accommodation: A 2-bedroom house within Sam’s Village is provided for the use of the Manager and his/her immediate family.
Contract: 6 months’ probation period followed by an indefinite period (subject to funding and AVM’s needs and priorities).
